Persimmons are a very seasonal fruit. They come right around end of Oct - early November and very quickly disappear. I've hardly seen them with the regular fruit sellers, but have had to go deeper into the market to see them. There are two varieties of persimmons Fuyu and Hachiya. In India we get only the Hachiya. To me they taste like a cross between a chikoo/sapota and a mango. It has a smoother texture than sapota and is actually quite nice.

Figs! I've always enjoyed them as anjeer ice cream at Naturals. But never thought I'd actually add them to a cake. April is filled with birthdays in our family. Since its summer, we all prefer fruity stuff over anything else. I went in search of blackberries which I'd seen with a hawker. But persistent efforts to find blackberries in this neighbourhood ended up 'fruit'less. Disappointed I just picked up a box of figs at the store and decided to wing it. I used a recipe I found on a lovely food blog 'Tart to Heart' I discovered on the search for Fresh Fig cakes. It's quite similar to the last couple of cakes I've posted, except it uses Honey. Imagine Honey? I've never actually used it as an ingredient in a cake. Exciting!!! The recipe uses butter which I conveniently ignored and subbed with olive oil.  Yeah, yeah we continue with that.

There's something about strawberries... especially when you find them in summer. They're red, luscious, gorgeous and just waiting for you. Normally, I'd say no cos its out of season and normally, I'd also never get it from a street side hawker. I have this phenomenal fear of being sold fruits with toad pee on them. Don't ask me why. Its probably more than toad, but lets keep it polite on a food blog. This one I couldn't resist though. Street hawker or not, I had to have them and it was perfect to twist my Orange & Olive Oil Cake into a Strawberry Almond Cake. Did I also tell you I have an olive oil fetish this season? Welcome to my world.

I have a block.. well several... but primarily, I find it difficult to cook in kitchens not my own. I should say baking cos its not something where I can throw spices willy nilly and make things alright. I try to avoid it but its not always easy saying no to my baker genes. So when I'm in an unfamiliar kitchen like I am now, I want to bake something which I can make blindly and still get something really yum to satiate those cravings. Its also summer and I'm on a fruit binge which makes things easier. I made a Banana, Orange and Pineapple Fresh Fruit Cake which I forgot to take a picture of. So yeah, no recipe for that yet.
