When my closest friends moved countries, I was the recipient of a lot of goodwill, a lot of love, a lot of memories and a lot of stuff from their pantry. Upali passed on these limes and I very happily accepted them as Kaffir Limes despite them not having the ridgy exterior that kaffir limes have. I kept calling them kaffir limes till after a point even I  realized the distinctive kaffir lime aroma was missing. Something, my brother kept mentioning over and over again... 'But it doesn't have thaaaattt... like you know the last time you made it...'

Update from Upali: These limes are called Gondho Lebu in Bengali and they travelled all the way from Calcutta to my cake. Thanks so much Upli!

Lime Syrup Cake

This is going to be a long post. Not because of a recipe actually. More because now that I've got a platform to say something, I really want to say something I've got on my mind.

It all started with that Indira Nooyi article. I'm sure you've all read it. Well, if you're Indian and you're on Facebook, you have. After all, she's the most famous Indian female in the corporate world. Someone all girls in the country are supposed to look up to. We don't have too many idols besides movie stars and rubbish politicians. Then she comes out with a story how women can't have it all. I guess we're all caught up in Sheryl Sandberg's 'Lean In'. Frankly I don't have the inclination to listen to either of them. I maybe female, I could belong to the working class, but we all have our battles and no two of them are the same. But none of this matters to me. What mattered most to me in Indira Nooyi's article was the milk incident.

#BadGirlBreakfasts Part 2 - Banana & Coconut flakes on Toast

These are not regular bananas. These are the other bananas, the big long ones from Kerala. You also get them in Cuba, Nigeria and I think Miami cos that's what Jon Favreau picked up in the movie 'Chef' and he called them plantains!!!
Do ya hear me people??? Plantains!!!! I grew up calling these bananas plantains till I was very properly corrected by my sister and my friend that no, they are bananas.

I have a theory that if you are writing down a recipe, you better write it down the first time. Or by the time you get around to writing it down, you've played around with the original one so many times that you've completely lost the plot.

This is my case for poaching pears. The first time I poached pears, I measured water, I measured wine, I measure orange juice, I counted cinnamon sticks, I basically had everything in hand. These days I throw everything in together in saucepan and pray it does the job. Almost always it does, which goes to prove, yes, sometimes you don't have to be that perfect and creepily crazy about everything.

A Case for Poaching Pears

Congratulate me! This is my first post with an actual DSLR pic. One I haven't yet learnt to use despite being in my hands for over 6 months. I probably took a hundred shots of this yoghurt before I had one I moderately liked. This one. But by then I didn't have a choice. My frozen yoghurt had begun dripping and this one was the last serving. So I stuck a spoon in it and gobbled it all up melted, frozen and all.

Fruity Froyo

I've been away for a while. I can't promise to be back entirely. But, I will keep popping up cos there are too many things I make on a whim and a fancy and don't note down ingredients for. This is a fun one I want to remember.

The way I start making stuff is, I look around in the market and check out seasonal produce. Then I start thinking of ways I can combine it to make interesting flavours. By now, you must have realised I generally prefer everything to have more than one main ingredient. It makes making it interesting for me, eating it more so. Or so I believe.

Fig, Orange & Pistachio Conserve

Everytime I look at my pictures, I think I should get myself a camera. And then I put aside the thought for another rainy day when I cook up a storm, take pictures and think oh man! there's just too much noise in these pictures. This one's been adjusted using instagram and picasa. Though I still can't make a bad shot good. The one I put up on FB was unfiltered and in my opinion was a sad picture for something as lovely as these rolls.

Orange Marmalade & Pistachio rolls

Sometimes I wonder if I'm crazy to put up something as simple as a frozen yoghurt. But it doesn't seem so crazy when I remember that I actually went and read up on a lot of frozen yoghurt recipes to finally make one.

Mango FroYo

I'm not even going to bother getting into banalities this time. The recipe is soooo good, we've been having these shortcakes plain, with marmalade, now spiced plums. It just disappears. Batches and batches of shortcakes... and the shortcakes itself are so easy, you can make and bake them in 30 mins flat with no whisking shisking business.

Oatmeal Shortcakes with Spiced Plums

Figs! I've always enjoyed them as anjeer ice cream at Naturals. But never thought I'd actually add them to a cake. April is filled with birthdays in our family. Since its summer, we all prefer fruity stuff over anything else. I went in search of blackberries which I'd seen with a hawker. But persistent efforts to find blackberries in this neighbourhood ended up 'fruit'less. Disappointed I just picked up a box of figs at the store and decided to wing it. I used a recipe I found on a lovely food blog 'Tart to Heart' I discovered on the search for Fresh Fig cakes. It's quite similar to the last couple of cakes I've posted, except it uses Honey. Imagine Honey? I've never actually used it as an ingredient in a cake. Exciting!!! The recipe uses butter which I conveniently ignored and subbed with olive oil.  Yeah, yeah we continue with that.

There's something about strawberries... especially when you find them in summer. They're red, luscious, gorgeous and just waiting for you. Normally, I'd say no cos its out of season and normally, I'd also never get it from a street side hawker. I have this phenomenal fear of being sold fruits with toad pee on them. Don't ask me why. Its probably more than toad, but lets keep it polite on a food blog. This one I couldn't resist though. Street hawker or not, I had to have them and it was perfect to twist my Orange & Olive Oil Cake into a Strawberry Almond Cake. Did I also tell you I have an olive oil fetish this season? Welcome to my world.

I have a block.. well several... but primarily, I find it difficult to cook in kitchens not my own. I should say baking cos its not something where I can throw spices willy nilly and make things alright. I try to avoid it but its not always easy saying no to my baker genes. So when I'm in an unfamiliar kitchen like I am now, I want to bake something which I can make blindly and still get something really yum to satiate those cravings. Its also summer and I'm on a fruit binge which makes things easier. I made a Banana, Orange and Pineapple Fresh Fruit Cake which I forgot to take a picture of. So yeah, no recipe for that yet.
